Our seeds have germinated and our very first sprouts of the year are here! Here is a week 1 tour.

There are few things as exciting in the world of gardening as seeing those first seedlings pop up. I am constantly filled with with all sorts of warm and fuzzy feelings every time I look into the greenhouse and see new little green babies being born.
There is a 100% chance that I may have over-planted for the small space I have (just a balcony)…but I just couldn’t help it. I should have plenty of space, I hope, with the addition of my new GreenStalk Leaf Planter!! It was a steal during their Valentines Day Sale earlier this month.
Here’s what I have planted for Spring 2022:
- Tomatoes:
- Red Cherry
- New Yorker
- Giant Crimson
- Rio Grande Tomatillo
- Geranium Kiss
- Peppers:
- Cayenne Thin
- Carnival Blend Bell Pepppers (mixed varieties)
- Cubanelle
- Jalapeño
- Habanero
- Serrano
- Herbs & Flowers:
- Sweet Basil
- Holy Basil (tulsi)
- Genevese Basil
- Cilantro
- Oregano
- Lemon Mint
- Calendula (pacific beauty)
- Nasturtium (peach melba)
- Echinacea
- Yarrow
- St. Johns Wort
- Chamomile
- Black Russian Sunflower (an unfortunate variety pick, considering the circumstances, but at least a sunflower)
- Cucumbers:
- Lemon Cucumbers
- Gherkins
- Greens & Other Things:
- Kajari Melon
- Coffee
- Mesclun Lettuce Blend
- Vates Kale
These were planted in my indoor greenhouse on 2/20/2022. My first sprouts started coming up by 2/24! Its been one whole week and nearly half of my seeds have germinated already. I am exceedingly happy with my rates so far. There are a few im still waiting to come up, but I can already see tiny little heads of green about to pop. My slowest germinators so far are the coffee (not a surprise as I was expecting a slow rate with this one, and its more of a fun experiment), St. Johns Wort, Nasturtiums (this happened to me last year as well, they took a bit longer than the rest to come up), Echinacea (this is my first year growing echinacea so I am unsure still of what to expect!), kajari melon (another one I have never grown and I have no idea if this will work lol) and the peppers! But the peppers are starting to come up and if you squint, you can see the beginnings of them!
Here is an update photo taken today of the Tomato babies!

I am most excited about the Giant Crimson Tomatoes from MIgardener! If you have not heard the story of this tomato, it was extinct until Luke grew seeds from an 85 year old packet, you can watch the video on his channel here. It’s a fantastic story of true devotion and I am so incredibly excited to have these tomatoes growing in my space. Plus, all 5 seeds I was sent have germinated wonderfully! I can’t wait to try them (and save as many seeds as possible).
Week 2 is looking pretty rad already, so ill be be back with weekly updates on these little guys as often as I can.
Everyday we get closer and closer to spring, and the current goings-on of the greenhouse is proof!
See ya next time, Goblin Friends!
